Examples of Modeling these operations

Showing students how the same situation can be viewed from multiple perspectives

  • Week 3: Students were presented with several of gestalt images, and the class discussed how foregrounding different parts caused different images to appear
  • Week 3: In teams students retold standard stories (Cinderella, Snow White, etc.) from different perspectives

Showing students how different thinkers foreground different parts of the human experience

  • Week 3: Teams were asked to consider passages from two very different thinkers (Thomas Aquinas and Bernard Mandeville) and to identify things that were of concern to either of the authors (e.g. virtue or economic productivity).  Then, using the software Prezi, the entire set of qualities were entered next to the names of each thinkers, and the class was asked how much to magnify or shrink the term, as a reflection of how important a particular issue was to that thinker.

Showing students how to identify the values and assumptions in a particular thinker

  • Week 2: The class worked collectively to contrast the values in passages from Thomas Aquinas and Poggio Bracciolini
  • Week 4: In class a passage by the 19th century writer Samuel Smiles was discussed, and the values and assumption implicit in the work was explored collectively
